Delhi Belly, a must watch !

Yesterday went for Delhi Belly, this movie has no interval. But theater made it up by showing advertisements for first 20 minutes. In Bangalore English version of movie (with some Hindi dialogues) was playing in theaters. After watching the movie, I felt that I should have watched Hindi Version to get a better feel of the language :) Vijay Raaj was brilliant as villain. Our filmmakers should be writing more characters for him. Some scenes yuck, whole theater was laughing the hearts out in the comic scenes. Whole movie is setup in the backdrop of an upset 'belly'. This is not like other movies where abusive language is used just to increase the coolness quotient. I hate you like I love you in brackets :) Aamir Khan never disappoints.

A bitter experience

Two months back when a dear friend returned to Bangalore, we started looking for a bigger house. We always prefer to avoid brokers. We surfed almost all the real estate sites and newspapers. Went to see lot of houses in different areas but some or other way none conform to our requirements. Some were not worth for their rent, transport, sanitation, etc. Then one 'fine' day came across one ad about an apartment with Mr. X as contact, called him and fixed a appointment next day evening at 6. He arrived around 8, after excusing himself 5-5 minutes for half a dozen times. "We will not take house from him, even if he shows something excellent" , my friend said. Later we realized we should have stuck to those words. Anyway we saw the house, liked it and paid Rs 5000 as advance. Luckily we took the receipt. Mr. X , driving a old scooter, described himself to be very close to a top Karnataka politician, claiming to have 4 such buildings.

Next weekend got a call from Mr. X, that he has got a medical emergency and he is not in Bangalore. Someone is admitted to hospital and he needs some money to be deposited to a hospital nearby my house. Considering his jactitations and connections, it was a surprise that he chose us for asking help, who he met couple of days back. It was kind of dilemma, but then with our weakness of 'can't say no' gave Rs 2000. He promised that he will return it next day but he didn't and we also didn't ask assuming that it will be settled while preparing rental agreement.

Then we met with him one more time at the building, he told that around 15th June agreement will be done. My friend left for Lucknow (his maiden trip in 12-13 months). 15th I got a call that all the agreements will be done from 25th June. We were okay with that. 24th I got a call that he got busy with something and will hand over the keys on Monday 27th and we can move in. Sunday I went to building and the apartment what he showed me was already occupied by someone. I called him and he told that I will be getting some different apartment as some elderly senior person came and he gave him that one. Now I started suspecting his intentions.

Anyway Monday afternoon I got a message from Mr. X that he got some family problem and he can't pick the phone but I can SMS if I have to ask something. Then started the SMS marathon. He was replying with lengthy messages but not ready to come on phone and talk. He postponed it on Tuesday. Tuesday again same story only SMSes. I called him from different number, he picked this time asked me to come at some place and then he didn't turn up. Then his accomplice called me and told that some 'Madam' (Mr. X's mother) is not ready to give it to bachelors. This was shocking and disturbing. I got around 10 SMSes that Mr. X is trying to convince his mother but she is adamant. But still he didn't come on phone. We had already given notice to current landlord.

Finally after getting fed up with all this, we came back and asked (messaged) him to return the advance that we paid. Meanwhile I talked with my current landlord, luckily no one has booked the house, so I extended it for one more month (yeah with increase in the rent).

Next day, Wednesday, whole day Mr. X kept dilly-dallying through messages, asked us to come over to some place, didn't turn up, even stopped replying to messages and finally switched off the phone. Switching off the phone was the last straw. Next number I dialed was 100, got the Bangalore control room number and then number of local Police station where we were asked to come next day at 10 AM.

We reached the station around 9, told everything which was little difficult (as we don't know the local language). Some police fellow called him and he told that he will come by 11 o' clock. Again we went at 11 and shift has changed in the police station, so whole new staff and we had to narrate our story all over again. Again they called him, he told he will come soon, didn't turn up, called again, this time he told he will come in 15 minutes, didn't come this time too, now the police fellow got little angry and called again, this time he didn't pick the phone.

Then I got a call from a unknown number, who claimed to be Mr. X's friend and a local political party leader. He talked to police and promised that Mr. X has got some problem today and he will return the money tomorrow and he personally took the guarantee. Next day after marathon round of SMSes and phone calls, I was asked to come at some place to collect money which obviously I denied. Finally money was sent by a Auto driver to my office address, for which he charged Rs 300. So, finally I got my money back.

That was a moral victory for us. It was never about the amount, it was about how people break the trust of others, how one should not be taken for ride just because he is not sly, it was about if there is any rule in the land.

But there were some hard lessons learnt at the end of all this.

Ready is disappointing

Went to watch much anticipated ‘Ready’ last Saturday. After ‘Dabangg’ this next Salman starrer has managed to create lot of buzz. I knew how it will be, but Salman movies one doesn’t go for story, script, logic, etc but goes for Salman’s histrionics.

150 minutes were very tough to hold up save for 25 minutes which has ‘Dhinka Chika’ and ‘Character Dheela’ chartbusters. I have heard that South Indian versions (Uthamaputhiran in Tamil, Raam in Kannada, Ready in Telugu) were good or at least one time watch.

Salman as usual was acting himself. A big joint happy family with lot of irritating double meaning dialogues. Good actors like Mahesh Manjrekar, Akhilendra Mishra and Manoj Joshi were wasted. Paresh Rawal and Sudesh Lahri managed to create some funny moments. Yeah Asin was also there somewhere. And how movie can be over without shirtless scene of Salman.

This movie will definitely do well in single screen theaters in North India belt, where Salman Khan has lot of faithful die-hard fans. Couple of more movies like this and Salman will end up like Akshay Kumar.

सरफरोशी की तमन्ना अब हमारे दिल में है

I wanted to do it from long time. This is from Anurag Kasyap's Movie 'Gulaal' composed and sung by Piyush Mishra. He had composed a new version of this popular song, in his own words that fits very well today. I searched the lyrics of this song on net but couldn't find anywhere. Finally while traveling to Lucknow last week I put it into words.

Indian Railways : Go green !!!

Last week while travelling to Lucknow, this thought again crossed my mind, so putting it here. I read somewhere that daily almost 2 lakh railway tickets are booked online through IRCTC, and mostly these are e-tickets. While booking online IRCTC sends a SMS too. But railways mandates to carry a print out of the e-ticket otherwise they will charge Rs 50 as fine. Also carrying a ID card is mandatory, then I wonder whats the use of carrying the printout of the e-ticket, anyway ticket examiner has the list, he has to ask for ID proof and in most of the cases passengers may have SMS too.

Call it Indian mindset or whatever, generally people carry two copies of printout, one handy and the other one in luggage in case they misplace the first one, because then Ticket examiner will fine them. Then one can think that daily in India almost 3-4 lakhs papers are wasted just to carry the e-ticket printouts.

Today when all the government departments are advocating for going green, I believe its high time Railways should also think about this e-ticket printout stuff. If not stopping, at least it should not be mandatory.

Going to Lucknow

I am writing this one while lying in the upper birth in the train, will post it as soon as I get connectivity. I am traveling to Lucknow for around 10 days, Last time I went for Diwali.

I am taking my bike also with me, which is loaded in the third coach behind my coach. Transferring two-wheelers through Indian Railways is cheapest and safest mode. But as usual you have to pay some to packing fellow, person who will load and unload, may be RPF, but even after all this it will be lesser than courier costs.

When i booked my ticket, it was in RAC but it got confirmed and upper birth was allotted. Everybody around me is going to Lucknow.
There are some (proud) parents whose children are working in Bangalore, they are returning after visiting them, talking about Bangalore's life, how inflation is increasing, then there is one uncle who is very happy and its no less than a achievement for him that his ticket got confirmed, he cant stop talking about it like how Railway ticketing system works, lot of things were new to me ;). Then there is one aunt whose (i think) daughter got through some company in Bangalore and she is describing all the details of the corporate and how things work, Its always good to hear a different, funny and layman view on these things. The train got late by almost 4 hours in Bangalore itself, but now its running late by an hour, so it has made up a lot.

I am hoping a good weather in Lucknow, a friend's wedding is there on 7th Feb. This time while I will be returning via Delhi. Planning to catch with some friends, that will be a lot of fun.

Padma Awards and other award ceremonies

Like every year this year also Govt announced the Padma awards, felt really happy for some names.I never understood the critera or eligibility of these awards, This year VVS Laxman got Padma Shri, I am not sure why he was ignored last year over MS Dhoni and Harbhajan, who got it last year and they skipped the ceremony despite being in India. Sania Mirza got in 2006, may be that year she would have reached to the third round of any tournament. Saif Ali Khan is still wondering why he got one ? They should give one to Rakhi Sawant too.

I am pretty sure that one day Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, may be her husband too will get 'Bharat Ratna'. Can somebody explain that how come Rajiv Gandhi got Bharat Ratna got 8 years before great JayPrakash Narayan ?

Last week there were lot of Bollywood award ceremonies, Suddenly everywhere there was a special award for Dharmendra, just because his movie release is round the corner. One award ceremony, there was a special award in some weird category for Aishwarya Rai and Amitabh Bachchan. They have introduced so many categories to please everyone. Shahrukh is crashing in every award show with his no-more-funny jokes, he can do anything for money. Artificial smiles, plastic emotions were everywhere. Actors like Aamir, Ajay Devgn, Naseer are very correct in not attending these ceremonies.

Republic Day !!!

This week nation celebrated 62th republic day. Although it was a holiday some customer escalations kept me busy whole day, happens sometime.

Got sick of 'Get Idea' ads. I wonder from where Abhishek got his accent, after all whole life he has spent in India. Seems he has lot of free time now a days, one new idiotic ad comes every week.

This republic day a ADC was burnt to death by some oil mafia, what a shame and then blame game started.

I strongly feel now that country needs a break from Congress. Whats the opposite of pro, its con. Going by it, opposite of progress is congress. This old joke suddenly has found lot of relevance.

We have a economist prime minister who cannot control the basic commodities prices, an agricultural minister for whom cricket is more important than his ministry, alliance partners in East and South who dictate their terms. What pains me more is the inaction against the people who were involved in mass scale corruption. After CWG mess, Kalmadi still headed the Indian contingent in Asian Games in China. He still occupies the IOA chief post. The only action from Congress was to remove him from some position of the Congress Working Committee, looks like he mismanaged their funds too. Govt is going all out to defend CVC Thomas despite his tainted record. A Raja has the 'Dalit' license, so nobody can touch him. But, when it comes to stopping some youth wing to hoist National flag in Kashmir, Govt is very proactive.

First Weekend of New Year !!!

Its a first weekend of this year. Today watched 'Do Dooni Char' movie, starring Rishi and Neetu Kapoor. A simple movie which captures the hardships and emotions of a typical Indian middle class family brilliantly. It is one of the best movies of this year, a must watch. Rishi and Neetu Kapoor as Duggal couple are simply superb.

Almost whole day glued to TV, watching IPL auctions. Around 80 million dollars and 350 players, open market bidding. Gautam went for highest bid, Delhi Daredevils could have retained him. After long time Sehwag and Gautam will play against each other, they have always played together. Harbhajan and Symonds will play for same eam, hope Bhajji will teach him some nice non-racist Indian slangs. RCB paid Saurabh Tiwary 1.6 million dollars, way more than some of the world's top most players. Hope he will prove his worth. Ganguly is better than them any day. I feel his larger than life image and misadvertised attitude issues went against him. Chennai retained almost their earlier team which they built for 3 years, they remain the best side. Preity Zinta and Shilpa Shetty with no knowledge of whats going around were there only to show the batons.

Can you imagine Ravindra Jadeja got more money than Zaheer, any explanation ? Irfan Pathan out of active cricket for almost a year (I am seeing him only in MTV and reality shows) got around 2 million dollars.

Cheers,
Hari.
